The Crown's leading actor Josh O'Connor and Normal People's Paul Mescal are to star as lovers in a new romance drama.

It has been announced that the BAFTA and Emmy Award winning actors will take the lead in a new LGBTQ+ movie, The History of Sound.

Josh, 31, and Paul, 25, will see their characters meet during the First World War and will set out to record the lives and voices of their countrymen.

The History of Sound will be an adaptation of Ben Shattuck's short story of the same title about the two lovers who unexpectedly meet in 1916.

Director Oliver Hermanus said: "I instantly fell in love with Ben Shattuck's flawlessly beautiful short story and knew I had to be involved in its journey to the screen.

"Paul and Josh are two of the most promising actors of their generation who will share with us deeply soulful performances."

He went on to say: "This is an unexpected love story that needs to be told – it is a journey through the life of America, across the 20th century and the traditions of American folk music, all seen through the bond between two men immersed in the history of sound.

"This undeniably powerful story will certainly resonate with audiences the world over."

Producer Andrew Kortschak said: "Working with Oliver, Ben, Paul and Josh is an immense privilege.

"We are all struck by Ben's beautiful and resonant short story, exploring love, loss and memory, we are beyond excited to adapt this story for the screen with this incredible team."

While an official description of the film produced by End Cue reads: "In this snatched, short-lived moment in their young lives and while discovering the epic sweep of the US, both men are deeply changed."

Production on the film will begin in Summer 2022 on set in the United States while some scenes will be filmed in the UK and on location in Italy.

Paul who became a household name after playing Connell Waldron in the BBC miniseries Normal People recently revealed that while he would work with co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones again, there is nothing set in stone.

He told Metro.co.uk: "I would work with Daisy again in a heartbeat, and regardless of the work or anything I'm just [always] really excited to see her," before adding "there's nothing in the pipeline" for a series two of Normal People.
