Many This Is Us fans have been wondering where the sixth and final season takes Deja (Lyric Ross) and Malik’s (Asante Blackk) story. The two lovebirds just reached a new level in their relationship. But there’s still some drama ahead. Recently, the This Is Us Season 6 team revealed that Deja will face “massive consequences” following her weekend with Malik – here’s everything we know so far.
What happened to Deja and Malik in ‘This Is Us’ Season 6 Episode 2?
In This Is Us Season 6 Episode 2, “One Giant Leap,” Deja went to Boston to visit Malik, who goes to Harvard. And at first, their reunion was less than ideal.
It was clear that Malik was overwhelmed by the demands of his classes, parenthood, and work. Janelle’s birth mother, Jennifer, also wasn’t helping the situation, and there was a bit of tension between Deja and Jennifer. But in the end, Deja didn’t let the obstacles get in the way of her happiness. She supported her boyfriend’s academic career and told him to finish a paper he was stressed about completing. Deja also took a big leap and slept with Malik for the first time.
That said, Deja lied to Randall (Sterling K. Brown) about her whereabouts. At the start of the This Is Us episode, Deja told her father she was sleeping over at her friend’s house. But in reality, she took a six hour bus ride from home to see her boyfriend.

The This Is Us Season 6 Episode 3 promo trailer for “Four Fathers” on Jan. 18 confirmed that Randall will find out about Deja and Malik’s weekend together. In the preview, Deja gets a text from Malik that not-so-subtly reveals that they slept together. The message also plays out loud in a car with Randall in the passenger seat. And the city councilman does not look too happy.
Meanwhile, director Kay Oyegun teased what’s coming in the next new episode of This Is Us, confirming that there will be some major consequences for Deja moving forward.
“Oh gosh. Yeah. Consequences,” Oyegun told Glamour when asked about Deja’s lie to Randall. “There’s massive consequences for everything that [Deja] did.”
Deja and Malik’s story will not be an ‘easy ride’ on ‘This Is Us’
Although it’s clear that Deja will face consequences for her actions in This Is Us Season 6, some fans might be wondering what that will entail. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Oyegun noted that Deja’s actions repeat what she’s done with Malik in the past. Remember, the two skipped school to be together in the fourth season. But regardless, it seems the family will have a “big reaction” to what Deja did.
“Deja’s decision with Malik is sort of a repeat of her previous decision with Malik,” Oyegun said. “This girl does not learn her lessons, and [it’s] going to have a very, very, big reaction from her family. So it’s not going to be an easy ride.”
That said, writer Kevin Falls hinted that there could be some pushback from Deja. So we’ll have to see how this dynamic plays out in the end.
“She’s fiercely independent, too,” Falls said of Deja. “She’s been on her own for a while, she’s not used to having people tell her what to do. She’s a strong woman and seen a lot in life. So she’s a hard person to tell what to do, that’s for sure.”
