It seems like just yesterday that Beyoncé wowed the world by announcing her pregnancy live on MTV’s 2011 Video Music Awards. Now, nearly nine years later, her firstborn is turning out to look just like her.
Blue Ivy Carter celebrated her eighth birthday yesterday. Though we don’t know how the Knowles–Carter family rung in the big day yet, Blue’s grandfather Mathew Knowles did post a new photo of her to his Instagram.
In the touching tribute, Knowles edited animated stars and stripes over a photo of Blue standing in front of a bright orange wall. Looking every bit as photogenic as mom Beyoncé, she gives the camera a tiny smile while donning a long-sleeved orange shirt, a cherry-print skirt, and a pink-and-purple pineapple-print backpack.
“Happy Birthday to my beautiful and oldest granddaughter Blue Ivy,” Knowles wrote in the caption. “Love, Papa G”
Beyoncé previously opened up for ELLE‘s January 2020 cover story about how becoming a mother has transformed her life.
When asked if she was disappointed that her albums Lemonade and Homecoming didn’t receive awards, she responded, “I began to search for deeper meaning when life began to teach me lessons I didn’t know I needed. Success looks different to me now. I learned that all pain and loss is in fact a gift.” She added, “After having a difficult pregnancy, I took a year to focus on my health.”
She credited Blue for teaching her to search for a deeper meaning in life.
“Having miscarriages taught me that I had to mother myself before I could be a mother to someone else,” she said. “Then I had Blue, and the quest for my purpose became so much deeper. I died and was reborn in my relationship, and the quest for self became even stronger. It’s difficult for me to go backwards. Being ‘number one’ was no longer my priority. My true win is creating art and a legacy that will live far beyond me. That’s fulfilling.”
