The singer is now a major solo star in the US but says the coronavirus isolation has made him realise he needs to find the woman of his dreams. London-born Matt lives in Las Vegas where his sell-out shows were a victim of the pandemic and now he’s homesick, self-isolating with his dog. But he has thrown his energies into funding meals for the “awe-inspiring” NHS who cared for his mother before she died from cancer.
Matt, 51, together with twin brother Luke, scored top 10 hits with I Owe You Nothing and When Will I Be Famous? when he was only 18.
“I think lately in isolation I have learnt I cannot compromise my heart. I know what I want and I know why.
“I am single and I live by myself and I have a little French bulldog called Reggie. He’s my buddy and I think in these times, in some ways I have felt a little despondent.
“I definitely would love to get married and have that connection. I would love to have that in my life and I hope it does not continue to allude me but it was difficult.
“My hope will be we will love each other and flirtation will be a thing of the future rather than the past.
“We’ve got to remember that the human condition thrives upon humour, thrives upon connection and also we have to be responsive. I hope we really do get back to that place and I have definitely had days when I feel horribly lonely and days where I feel liberated by self-reflection.”
Matt believes he has missed out on love because of confused ideas about who he is. “I think the issue for me has been preconceptions, they irritate me. I’ve never had a drug in my life, I don’t smoke, I like a glass of wine but I don’t have an addictive personality.
“I’m surrounded by beautiful women because of what I do and that can be a real hindrance… I can’t convince somebody that’s caught up in the preconceptions of a musician.
“It’s not sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll, that’s a cliche. So I think that’s where I struggle. We are full of soul and socially aware and emotionally intelligent but I can’t convince somebody that a preconception is only a preconception.” Matt has had a hugely successful residency in Las Vegas for 11 years and in 2018 the documentary Bros: After The Screaming Stops won a Bafta.
But perhaps 11 years in the neon desert of Las Vegas is enough for any man. “Without question I feel really homesick,” he says. “I dream of putting on a pair of brogues, a threepiece suit and walking through St James’s Park, feeding the birds and having a pint.”
Matt has been doing his bit for the folks back home. There’s the charity single If I Ain’t Got You, a cover of the Alicia Keyes hit, and his Just Giving page that has raised £14,000 to help the owner of Burger Bites in Chalk Farm, North London, deliver food to NHS key workers and care homes.
There are also Instagram Live calls with some of the workers he’s helping, hoping to keep them buoyed up before they head into the Covid-19 wards.
“It’s the most important thing that I am doing every day,” he says. “I am doing lots of projects and talking to people in Hollywood but I made a promise to connect to people and it has been incredible.”
Matt was spurred on to help the NHS in tribute to the care his mother Carol received before she died from cancer six years ago.
“The NHS gave her hope, gave her dignity, gave her grace, they afforded her counsel, they were everything that was awe-inspiring,” he says. “She passed away in America with us but I will be forever grateful to them.
“I would speak to the nurses and they were so full of life and they would make my mum laugh.
“We’re all going to need them at some point in our life and I hope this allows us to never forget how lucky we are. They really are earth angels and I can’t say enough about how much I admire them. They are the new soldiers, they are modern day frontline soldiers protecting us knowingly going into harm’s way, charging at danger.”
But for now, Matt simply needs someone to share his life with…
