Deliveroo TV advert is banned after it sparked 300 complaints for implying drivers can deliver orders from multiple restaurants in one package

  • The video clip showed a woman pulling meals from a number of fast-food chains
  • But it failed to show it is not possible to get a single delivery from multiple places
  • Each delivery on the Deliveroo app carries a fee, which ranges from 99p to £5.99

A TV advertisement for the takeaway app Deliveroo has been banned for misleading customers.

The clip showed a woman pulling meals from a number of fast-food chains, including KFC and Burger King, from a single ‘magic bag’.

But it failed to show it is not possible to get a single delivery from multiple chains using Deliveroo. It sparked 300 complaints, making it the third most complained about marketing campaign this year.

Each delivery on the app carries a fee – which ranges from 99p to £5.99 depending on the customer’s distance from the restaurant. The Advertising Standards Authority banned the advert. A Deliveroo spokesman said the advert highlighted the range of food available through the app. KFC was also censured by the ASA – for a printed advert featuring the phrase: ‘What the Cluck?! £1.99 fill up lunch’.

Complainants said the ad appeared to substitute ‘cluck’ for a four-letter swear word.

KFC claimed ‘cluck’ was ‘a reference to the noise of a chicken’ and not rude.
