BAFTAS: Kate Winslet makes emotional speech after best actress win
Denise Welch joined disappointed soap fans to hit out at BAFTA when the award for Best Soap and Continuing Drama was not shown in full on Sunday’s broadcast.
Instead, the segment was relegated to the Awards Presented Earlier part of the show.
Taking to Twitter, a user named Annie fumed: “’Soap and Continuing Drama Series’ is just ‘Awards Presented Earlier’, now, apparently.
“BTW, this happened last year as well… a depressing and unfair trend. Hundreds of industry professionals work on the UK’s serial dramas every year. They’re not an afterthought, nor should they treated as such.”
Loose Women’s Denise reshared Annie’s tweet with tearful emojis, along with the caption: “The hardest working actors on television.”
Many others agreed with Denise and Annie, including Rick who replied: “Disgusting! Soap actors are the best.
“BAFTA maybe remember that the likes of Suranne Jones, Sarah Lancashire and Chris Hemsworth all started on soaps.”
Paul said: “I was very shocked to see that relegated. Maybe if they cut down on the shite “banter” from the hosts they’d have had room for it.”
While Debbie disagreed, adding: “So true, but not worthy of the main show!!!”

Casualty secured the 2023 BAFTA trophy for Best Soap, beating Emmerdale and EastEnders.
Coronation Street, which won the award last year, was snubbed from the final nominations list.
Denise played man-eater Natalie Horrocks in Coronation Street for three years from 1997.
She was the mistress of Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) whilst he was married to Sally (Sally Dynevor).
She was also landlady of the Rovers Return until she left the soap in 2000 after becoming pregnant with her son Louis, now 22.
Denise later returned to soaps playing Trish Minniver in Hollyoaks. She has also had roles in Waterloo Road, Holby City, Doctors and The Bill.
