The Detroit Jazz Festival, the world’s largest free jazz festival, has announced the star-studded lineup for its 41st edition to be held between Friday, September 4 and Monday, September 7 of this year.
The announcement came on the heels of Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer declaring a stay-at-home order through April 13 to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Bottom line, it’s hope and it’s 100% hope for us,” said Chris Collins, the artistic director of the festival, which was attended by a total of 325,000 jazz enthusiasts last year.
“We’re getting a flood of communications not just from all over the country but all over the world,” he continued, adding that the news of the festival’s lineup would serve as the “light at the end of the tunnel” in these dark times.
Featured in the 2020 lineup are legends of the likes of Herbie Hancock, Pharoah Sanders, Gregory Porter, Abdullah Ibrahim, Omar Sosa, and Marialy Pacheco, among others.
More acts are scheduled to be announced closer to the festival dates.
