Dove Cameron is opening up about starring on the Disney Channel early on in her career.
The 27-year-old actress and singer of course got her big break on the network in the series Liv and Maddie, where she played both characters, followed by her starring role in the Descendants movie franchise.
In a new interview, Dove talked about how different she was when starting out on Disney and how she’s transformed into the person she is today.

“It wasn’t like I was sitting there covering up this tattooed, queer, villainy thing. I had no idea who I was going to develop into. And so it really wasn’t much of a political statement to wear pink dresses and have blonde hair,” she told Byrdie. ”It’s like if I asked you for your middle school or high school photos and said, ‘That’s you forever. That’s it. The end.’”
However, she has used change in her appearance as a part of her process and evolution as a person.
“Every time [I’ve made a physical change], it’s been like, ‘Okay, I’ve reached some kind of emotional impasse. I need to do something new to reclaim myself. What’s that going to be today?’” Dove said, noting that going brunette was one of those ways.
“People can perceive there was a big shift because I released ‘Boyfriend,’ dyed my hair brown, got a bunch of tattoos, and came out all in one eight-month period,” she continued. “But none of those things were related in the sense that I hadn’t planned them. It was a result of me being like, ‘Okay, I need to do this differently,’ and finding a million different ways that felt more true to me.”
