TV presenter and NHS doctor, Ranj Singh, 42, has revealed parents of poorly children sometimes ask him to take photos with them in intensive care. Dr Ranj said the request is “really not appropriate”, but if the request brings distraught parents a bit of “normality” then he is happy to comply.
The former Strictly Come Dancing contestant has balanced his roles as a TV personality and NHS doctor for many years.
When asked in an interview in January whether fans request photos when he is working for the NHS, he replied: “Well, even worse than that, trying to take a photo of their child on a life support machine with me.
“That’s really not appropriate. I don’t think this is the right moment to be doing that sort of thing.”
Ranj expanded that the children he works with are usually “fairly honest about stuff like that”, but that it is their parents who can get “a little bit inappropriate”.
Despite feeling uneasy about the request, Ranj says he can understand why parents would want to ask.
The This Morning regular continued on the Homo Sapiens podcast: “I get it, you are in that weird environment as a parent and all rules go out of the window.
“This is not your comfort zone. This is not the real world, so you latch on to any sort of normality you can.
“But, if in that moment, I’m able to bring people a little bit of normality or, dare I say, positivity in some way, shape or form, then I’m more than happy to do that.
“I think those moments are really important, especially when you’re in crisis and you’re struggling, and everything is overwhelming. It often is in the environment I work in.”
Dr Ranj began his medical career after training in various hospitals across London. He currently specialises in the health of young people.
His media career began in 2012 when he presented Get Well Soon on CBeebies.
He went on to become This Morning’s resident doctor and host of ITV’s Dr Ranj: On Call.

In 2018, Ranj took to the Strictly Come Dancing ballroom alongside Janette Manrara.
The pair delighted fans with their performances including a Samba to George Michael’s Freedom! ‘90 and a Salsa to Fireball by Pitbull.
Unfortunately, they became the sixth couple voted off the competition after facing the dance-off against actor Charles Venn and his partner Karen Hauer.
Last year, Ranj confessed he did have one regret from his Strictly experience.
He told Express.co.uk in August: “I wish I’d taken it a little less seriously at times and had a bit more fun with it.”
He also offered some advice to any future contestants.
The doctor said: “Just enjoy it! Don’t get too bogged down in the details, you are not going to become an expert ballroom and Latin dancer in a matter of weeks.
“So do your best, obviously, but the best thing that you need to take away from this is to have fun.”
