Elton John fury: How music legend dubbed Brexit voters ‘stupid imperialists’

Sir Elton is known for his eccentric style and flamboyancy, both on and off the stage, and has become one of the most well-known singers from the Seventies. He was close friends with Princess Diana before her tragic death in 1997, and frequently brushes shoulders with other members of the Royal Family including Diana’s sons Prince Harry and Prince William. Sir Elton has come back into the limelight recently following the release of the 2019 biopic Rocketman – based on his own life – and the publication of his autobiography, ‘Me: Elton John’, released only this October.

At a concert in Verona, Italy, during his worldwide leg of Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, he shocked his fans by revealing his controversial political views.

He told the crowd: “I’m ashamed of my country for what it has done.

“It’s torn people apart… I am sick to death of politicians, especially British politicians.

“I am sick to death of Brexit. I am a European. I am not a stupid, colonial imperialist English idiot.”

His fans in the crowd cheered in response.

This is not the first time he has used his platform to express his political views.

In July 2018, when speaking at a charity event which aimed to raise awareness of HIV, he said: “I don’t think people in Britain were told the truth to start with…They were promised something that was completely ridiculous and wasn’t economically viable.”

He said the Brexit process itself could be compared to “walking through Hampton Court maze blindfolded, being turned around 16 times and trying to find your way out”.

Sir Elton also claimed voters were not aware what they were voting for at the time.

Interviewed by Channel 4 News, he said: “I don’t think people in Britain were told the truth to start with.

“I don’t think they knew exactly what they were voting for.

“They were promised something that was completely ridiculous and wasn’t economically viable.

“And then it’s got so complicated now, I just don’t know what’s going on.”

He added: “There’s a new cereal called Brexit. You eat it and you throw up afterwards.”

During the 2016 referendum, Sir Elton was strongly on the Remain side.

He even posted on Instagram in favour of the EU, sharing an image featuring the words “build bridges not walls” with the caption “I’m voting to remain #StrongerInEurope”.

Sir Elton has shown his keen interest in European affairs before – he wrote a song for the 1969 Eurovision song contest, ‘I Can’t Go On Living Without You’, although it came sixth out of six and did not make it to the live show.

These views have resurfaced less than a week after the Conservatives’ monumental success in the election.

The pro-Brexit party secured an additional 47 seats, painting the country blue and ensuring that Brexit will finally be delivered.

Voters will be hoping that the Parliamentary impasses are now in the past and that Britain can move on now Boris Johnson has a majority in the Commons.
