Tekashi 6ix9ine has given some of the most iconic interviews to Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club, but it looks like those days are over. The show — hosted by DJ Envy, Angela Yee, and Charlamagne The God — said on Dec. 17 that it doesn’t intend on inviting him back any time soon. While some people praised the decision, many others were appalled and quickly criticized the show.
Why doesn’t The Breakfast Club want Tekashi 6ix9ine on the show?
DJ Envy said he’s turned off by Tekashi 6ix9ine’s recent legal drama. The “Gummo” rapper has been incarcerated since November 2018 for crimes related to his former gang, The Nine Trey Bloods. He was initially facing up to life imprisonment but flipped on his former peers in exchange for less time. He’ll be sentenced on Dec. 18; it’s believed that Tekashi 6ix9ine will be credited for time served and released from prison.
Explaining his decision not to interview Tekashi 6ix9ine, DJ Envy pointed to the rapper’s legal case.
“You decided to tell on everyone that you was just riding on,” DJ Envy explained. “You turned on everybody. You get released and now you’re rewarded for it? I just don’t necessarily think it’s a message that I want to do. I don’t want to promote to kids that you go wild and do some stupid ish and you just go tell on the people you’ve done and all of a sudden you come out and can put out records and it’s all cool.”
Charlamagne Tha God agreed that the potential interview could send the wrong message. He said Tekashi 6ix9ine — whose real name is Daniel Hernandez — needs to take some time to figure out who he is first. “Daniel Hernandez has to do some soul searching,” he said.
Angela Yee, however, argued that a potential interview could Tekashi 6ix9ine the opportunity to set the record straight and speak directly to fans about his choices.
But DJ Envy and Charlamagne The God had their minds made up.
Twitter is appalled
On Twitter, the reactions ranged from shock to disappointment to anger. Many people couldn’t believe that the show dissed Tekashi 6ix9ine for snitching but not for his 2015 sexual misconduct case.
According to court documents obtained by Jezebel, the “FEFE” rapper “pleaded guilty to the use of a child in a sexual performance on October 20, 2015.” The files say that the girl was 13 while Tekashi 6ix9ine was 18. He received probation for the charge.
Following his guilty plea, Tekashi 6ix9ine went on to achieve massive success. He earned several Billboard-charting records and appeared on The Breakfast Club two times.
Twitter users can’t get over it all.
“being a convicted sex criminal was alright but how dare he SNITCH,” one Twitter user mused.
Others say that Charlamagne Tha God is merely trying to avoid Tekashi 6ix9ine because he once promised him sexual favors if he beat his case. (Charlamagne addressed this in the first interview above, saying that he was only joking.)
“Umm I believe Charlemagne owes Tekashi something when he’s released,” one woman teased.
Other Twitter reactions
Others are happy that Tekashi 6ix9ine won’t be interviewed.
Someone tweeted, “Good. do not support this foolishness. He threw everyone in front of the bus to save himself. He should be in jail along with the rest of them. DON’T REWARD BAD BEHAVIOR.”
Another person tweeted, “I get it tbh. It’s wrong but I get it. They’re doing for their own safety. It’s trash that people would real life threaten to kill snitches than someone who is a convicted sex criminal. But since the show airs in NY and he’s from there, it’d be open season for anyone after him.”
For what it’s worth, the group never came to a total agreement that Tekashi 6ix9ine will never appear on the show again. So, regardless of where you stand on this issue, you might want to brace yourself for all scenarios.
Plus, 6ix9ine may not even be released as soon as some people think. He’s still facing more than three decades in prison. His sentencing hearing begins at 10 a.m. ET on Dec. 18.
