The saying goes that you can please all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time. No one knows this quite so intimately as a celebrity on the receiving end of fan criticism.
They’re constantly in the public eye, and every move they made is held up to impossible standards. On top of that, nothing fades from memory. A quick Google search is enough to bring their most embarrassing moments rushing back to the spotlight.
Perhaps this kind of intense fan scrutiny is most impactful for celebrities who have to grow up in the public eye. After all, everyone changes as they age, and celebrities go through their most awkward stages and intense transformations with an audience looking on. This is definitely the case for Kylie Jenner.
Kylie Jenner grew up in the spotlight
As the youngest of the Kardashian-Jenner sisters, Kylie Jenner was only 10 years old when Keeping Up with the Kardashians first aired. Basically, her entire adolescence was brought into people’s living rooms, giving them plenty of opportunities to pick apart her actions and choices.
In the second season, Khloe Kardashian asks Kylie and Kendall Jenner about puberty and their growing bodies, and Kylie opens up with innocence and enthusiasm—all while the cameras are rolling.
Fans got to watch Jenner as a 12-year-old experimenting with makeup, a young teen concerned about her parents as their relationship crumbled and divorced loomed, a child trying to navigate her desire to spend more time with her friends and less time with her mom, and a birthday girl throwing an Alice in Wonderland-themed Sweet 16 party.
Success came early for Kylie Jenner
While she was the baby of the family and went through her most awkward teen years on camera, she is also the most economically successful of the sisters and the youngest self-made billionaire ever according to Forbes.
By the time she was just 19, she had successfully launched her cosmetics line, and her lip kits were selling out. That kind of fame and fortune comes with pressure, and the weight of it started to wear on Jenner.
In Season 12 of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Jenner tells her sister Kim Kardashian that she doesn’t think she can handle all of the fame: “Some people are born for this life and others aren’t and I just know I’m not.”
Immediately after this season, Jenner stepped away from the show. Just as she was trying to get a little space and privacy for herself, she also became pregnant, starting a whole new wave of attention and criticism. While Jenner did return to the show with more regularity later, it’s clear that the pressure of living her life for the world to see took a toll.
Fans think Kylie Jenner has changed in a bad way
Obviously, Jenner has changed since her first appearance on the show. She has gone from being a 10-year-old child to an incredibly rich entrepreneur and mom.
Still, fans are upset with what they see as negative personality transformations in the star. Some fans consider her to be shallow and full of herself. “She’s so artificial & cocky now (becoming worse as time passes),” one fan wrote on a Reddit thread discussing the issue. Another agreed, adding, [I] am completely over her wealth flaunting.”
Some even attributed the perceived personality change to plastic surgery: “When people get plastic surgery, why do they suddenly change personas?”
This is a speculation that Jenner has faced a lot. People will often hold up older photos of her from her youth and use them to suggest that she has had surgery to change her face. Jenner, however, denies ever going under the knife—though she does admit to using lip and face fillers to enhance her appearance.
Whatever the case, it seems that fans are frustrated with Jenner’s current personality, which they see as a negative change from her earlier days on the show. One has to wonder, however, if what they’re really seeing is simply someone who has grown up.
