Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan, 55, has taken the opportunity to call out government ministers after MP Helen Whately appeared on BBC Breakfast this morning to discuss children returning to schools after the coronavirus pandemic. The star, who is currently on holiday from GMB for the summer, questioned why politicians have seemingly been avoiding interviews on the ITV show.

It comes after Piers previously criticised the Prime Minister and members of the cabinet for deciding against going on the ITV show due to his aggressive interview style.

Piers retweeted a clip BBC Breakfast shared from their interview with Helen, which read: “’It’ll be safe for children to be back in schools’ Helen Whately MP tells #BBCBreakfast it is the government’s priority to get children back into schools.

“It comes as headteachers are calling for a ‘plan B’.”

Piers then fumed: “When will it be safe for Govt ministers to come back on @GMB – or is the risk still too severe?”

Fans took to the comments section of the journalist’s post to share their thoughts.

One person disagreed with Piers and wrote: “When the presenter allows them to speak and answer the questions without talking over them and ensuring their own self gratification purposes are aired.”

Another added: “Let them actually answer a question and I’m sure they’ll come back on Piers.”

However, a third person sided with the host and quipped: “Still too severe. They don’t want Piers Morgan to pull their pants down (figuratively speaking) on live TV at 7.30 in the morning. It’s so pathetic.”

A fourth fan commented: “Still too severe… keep calling them out.”

Piers also interviewed the Minister of State at the Department of Health and Social Care in April and accused her of laughing while they discussed personal protective equipment, the increase in care home workers’ deaths and frontline testing.

“We’re doing everything we can to protect vulnerable people -“ Helen began before she was cut off by Piers: “Well yes, I assume you are doing all that, but is it true that 4,000 people have died in care homes? Yes or no?”

Helen was then interrupted by the presenter while she tried to answer his question, which prompted her to smirk.

“I literally just asked you; is it true that 4,00 elderly people have died and all you can do is laugh! What is the matter with you?” Piers exclaimed.

“I’m not laughing! Please don’t suggest for a minute I’m laughing,“ Helen responded.

“We literally just saw you laughing,” Piers insisted again.

Following the controversial interview, Piers slammed the government again for boycotting GMB during the coronavirus lockdown.

Speaking about the situation to his co-host Susanna Reid back in June, he said: “Interesting how so many Tory MPs are saying, ‘Get back on the programme, it’s pathetic.’”

Susanna agreed, adding: “Actually it’s a dereliction of duty to our viewers and your voters.”

Piers then hit back: “And of course, we don’t care. Our ratings have never been higher. Literally never been higher.

“The less we have government ministers, the more people tune in. Maybe don’t hurry back. Maybe we’ll see you in September.”
