Before The Cars frontman Ric Ocasek’s death from heart disease on Sunday, the iconic musician left behind one last doodle with several lasting phrases scribbled on it.
The illustration was found by his family, resting on his armchair in the Manhattan townhouse where his estranged wife, Paulina Porizkova, found him dead on Sunday afternoon.
Surrounding the abstract image, the famed 75-year-old singer-songwriter wrote “Never forget that look,” “Keep on laughin’” and “It is what it is.”
Ocasek’s sons wrote that their late father “was a prolific doodler,” in a message shared on The Cars’ official Twitter account.
The post continued: “His passing was sudden, unexpected, and beyond heartbreaking. Yesterday, we found this last doodle on his armchair. He couldn’t have known what it would end up meaning to us. We love him so much.”
It’s unclear how long Ocasek had been suffering from lung disease. The city Medical Examiner’s office on Monday ruled that pulmonary emphysema, a type of lung disease, contributed to his death.
