It’s been nearly 10 years since Shania Twain married Swiss entrepreneur Frédéric Thiébaud, and she just spoke with AARP about how her previous marriage affected her and why she considers her current one “so beautifully twisted.”
Before you start judging Shania too much for this statement, know that her and Frédéric’s relationship had a really weird start. Shania used to be married to record producer Robert John Lange, and Frédéric used to be married to Shania’s friend and assistant Marie-Ann Thiébaud. Get ready for the bombshell! Marie-Ann and Robert cheated on Shania and Frédéric, ultimately ending their respective relationships. Crazy, right?
But then, according to Fox, Frédéric “quickly became a source of support for the singer, as both were going through the exact same betrayal,” which is pretty sweet. Shania and Frédéric officially started dating in 2009 and ultimately married two years later, so you can understand why Shania told AARP that their relationship is “twisted” before adding, “but so beautifully twisted.”
She also remembered how she felt after her marriage ended. Shania shared, “There were days I didn’t really care if tomorrow came….Survival is everything. I was in quicksand. I panicked like everybody does, but I didn’t surrender. I found a way out.”
Shania also described her childhood and witnessing her stepfather abuse her mother. Sadly, both of them passed away in a car crash when Shania was 22, leaving her to raise her three younger siblings. But despite these experiences, Shania tries to find the silver lining and has learned to pick herself up time and time again, something she says she’s gotten better at as time goes on.
“Sometimes I get overwhelmed coping with things, but experience also teaches you how to manage,” she shared. “When you get older, you have so much experience at falling and getting up. You’re not going to stop falling. But you will get better at getting up and brushing yourself off. I believe that. I’ve lived it.”
