Kevin Clifton gave a rare insight into his home life with his girlfriend Stacey Dooley, as the former Strictly Come Dancing star addressed his return to the West End. The Grimsby-born performer revealed that his other half has been assisting him during the third lockdown with auditions.

It comes as theatres remained closed, which saw a number of Kevin’s West End projects cancelled.

The 38-year-old explained that he was due to appear in War of The Worlds last year but the show was postponed, because of government restrictions imposed due to Covid.

The professional dancer, who announced he was leaving Strictly in 2020, kept himself busy during lockdown with several auditions.

Kevin revealed that he enlisted the help of Stacey with his audition tapes but confessed the documentary-maker got “too involved”.

Addressing his decision to quit Strictly, Kevin said: “Theatre was the primary reason of me leaving Strictly.

“So for me to be sat not doing theatre for a year, [Stacey] knew how important it was to me.”

The professional dancer continued: “She was helping me film my self-tapes for auditions for different shows. And she loves it. She loves having that part.

“Stacey gets a bit too involved and starts trying to act the part as well, even though she’s not on screen in the actual interview.”

He went on: “I kept having to tell her, ‘Stace, can you not do a dramatic pause there, because even though you feel that your acting, it’s just me on screen doing nothing for five seconds while you’re giving a dramatic pause.'”

But, the former Strictly star gushed over his girlfriend for being a big support for him this past year.

The pair lifted the Glitterball Trophy in 2018 and embarked on a romance months after the show ended.

Kevin is set to star in the live production of War of The Worlds and has shared his girlfriend’s excitement.

“Originally, I was supposed to do the show last year and the dates of another show changed, which meant I couldn’t do it [War of the Worlds] and then the dates changed again which meant that I could do it,” Kevin explained.

“It’s been backwards and forwards a little bit.”

He added: “But [Stacey] is really excited. She knows how much theatre means to me and how much I’ve been wanting to do this.”

The multi-award-winning show, War of The Worlds, will return in 2022.

The West End star will be making his debut as The Artilleryman alongside Steps’ and stage star Claire Richards, who makes her debut as Beth, The Parson’s Wife.

Speaking about his new role, Kevin explained: “It’s so relevant. It’s a huge production in terms of the size and scope of the show.

“And the role itself as the Artilleryman – I think it’s really cool.”

Kevin joins The Life Begins Again tour of Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds musical in March 2022. Tickets are on sale now via livenation.co.uk.
