Strictly’s Gorka Marquez has revealed he didn’t want to be partnered with now-fiancee Gemma Atkinson when they both appeared on the BBC show.
The couple first met during the 2017 series of Strictly Come Dancing and are now engaged and doting parents to daughter Mia, two-and-a-half.
However in a new interview, dancer Gorka Marquez, 31, said he was happy he wasn’t paired with fiancee Gemma Atkinson, 37, when they appeared on the same series of Strictly, revealing he thought she was “too tall”.
Speaking to Angela Bell on Scala Radio Gorka – who was partnered with Alexandra Burke that year – said of 37-year-old Gemma – who danced with Aljaz Skorjanec: "I didn't want to dance with her.”
When asked about his reaction to being given their partners on the show, Gorka explained: “No I didn’t want to dance with Gemma. She was very tall for me.
“You see some people when they know who they want to dance with or who they don’t want to dance with, if they say they want to dance with that person over there they are very friendly, very happy, very helpful.
He added: “If they don’t want to dance with someone, some people don’t even talk to them.”
Fellow dancer Karen Hauer, who was being interviewed alongside Gorka, echoed: '”We try to be courteous and amicable to everyone whether you want to dance with them or not.”
“If they can't dance they might turn out to be the loveliest person.”
Both Gemma and Gorka got through to 2017's Strictly finals with their respective partners – however had to contend with romance rumours as they got closer throughout the series.
The couple announced their engagement on Valentine's Day last year.
Hollyoaks actress Gemma wrote on Instagram at the time: “Valentine's forever… Of course I said yes” while Gorka penned: “The best day with my forever Valentine's. I asked and she said YES!!!!!! Happy Valentine's Day everyone.”
They first confirmed their romance as they celebrated their first Valentine's Day together in 2018.
In July 2019, they welcomed their daughter Mia into the world and have plans to hopefully have a second child in future.
The star, who is soon set to make her hotly anticipated Hollyoaks return, explained: "We'd love a sibling for her when she's a little older for sure," alongside a loving emoji.
Another fan asked her when they could be tying the knot, to which Gemma explained that official dates were still up in the air.
"No ideas!" she said. "We've done zero planning with all the Covid stuff.
"We've twice almost gone into the registry office and just done it but I don't think our families would be very happy. They want a good party!"
