The following story contains spoilers for the third season of Stranger Things.
At this point, season three of Stranger Things ended what feels like years ago, but you probably still have lingering questions about Hopper’s fate. Well, here’s some good news: We already know that Hopper will be back on Stranger Things in season four. And according to star David Harbour, the police chief’s return will come with a big reveal about his backstory–something he himself has known since the show first started.
Speaking recently at Liverpool Comic Con, the actor noted the season two scene where Eleven finds boxes in Hopper’s attic labelled “dad,” “Vietnam,” and “New York.”
“So there are these three things that we’ve established in the season that if we don’t pay off, it means that they’re bad writers,” he said. “And the Duffer brothers are very good writers. So I know specifically that in season four we will give you a big, huge reveal about Hopper’s backstory, which we haven’t really told you about.”
“I’m so excited about revealing this aspect of the character. It’s one of the things that I’ve known since the first frame of the first shot, and we haven’t expressed it yet. And finally we’re gonna express it in a big way.”

“It’s my favorite thing about him that you guys don’t know about him yet, but it has to do with these backstories of New York, Vietnam, and dad,” Harbour continued. “And I’m really excited for you guys to know more about that. And it relates, of course, to things he’s doing with Eleven and Joyce and things like that.”
Meanwhile, Steve Harrington actor Joe Keery recently teased a much darker fourth season of the show, saying: “I think that this year–and I know I say this every single year– but this is definitely going to be a lot scarier than prior years, because last year was pretty dark.”
