“I know a lot of songs. I’m not always the best with lyrics,” Adam Lambert cautiously said before participating in Elle‘s Song Association video series. He added, “I’m more of a melody guy.” Despite his disclaimer, the singer and occasional Queen frontman still managed to rock it out, conjuring lyrics from Aerosmith, Beyoncé, and, yes, Queen, on the spot.
The video begins with a smooth cover of “Smile,” composed by Charlie Chaplin for Modern Times but later made famous by Nat King Cole. Though he drew a few blanks, Lambert offered his glam rock spin on Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie” and Beyoncé’s “Green Light.”
The standout moment, however, comes at the end when Lambert sings Lady Gaga’s fiery “You and I.” In a crazy full-circle coincidence, the 2011 song actually samples Queen’s “We Will Rock You” and features guitar from the band’s Brian May! Give it a listen above.
