Is it just our imagination, or have internet trolls become even more insidious lately? Because Chrissy Teigen’s response to being body-shamed over the weekend is, to be plain and clear, pretty damn heartbreaking. The 34-year-old model became the target of cruel commentary after sharing a video of herself in a bathing suit, making her feel as though she had to defend everything from her figure to how content she is in her life.
Teigen took to Twitter on Sunday to post a short video of herself in a plunging one-piece bathing suit, joking, “I never post thirst traps, so here I am trapping you in thirst… with thirst.” Not surprisingly, many fans noted that the mom-of-two’s body is #goals. But, sadly, some commenters weighed in with negative (and downright rude) remarks. “Shaped like Sponge Bob lol,” said one. “I’m guessing she thinks she’s hot???” another wrote, accompanied by a gagging GIF.
When one fan pointed out “these comments are exhausting,” Teigen agreed — and here’s where it really breaks your heart. “Yeah they’re super mean lmao,” the Cravings author responded. And when another fan defended Teigen, she said, “Everyone used to… surgically enhanced curves. I’ve been a square my whole life and let me tell you, it’s paid off nicely in many ways!” Teigen went on to add, “Imagine if one day I showed up with hips and an ass. Ooooo you guys would be pissed then too! I’m happy, John’s happy, we all happy and doing a-okay!”
Of course, Teigen didn’t owe anyone any sort of explanation. In fact, we wouldn’t have judged her if she didn’t respond at all. However, the humility and vulnerability with which she did respond just go to show not only how amazing she is, but also how hurtful these flippant remarks made on social media can be.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time Teigen has had to deal with trolls (and almost certainly won’t be the last). However, she has managed to take the things about herself haters are most critical of and learn to love them even more — including her bathing suit body. As she told Glamour earlier this year, “I don’t take aesthetics so seriously now. It’s very fulfilling not having that pressure of putting on a swimsuit and looking good for a magazine while running around a beach, which I did when I was modeling.”
