Don’t start buggin’ yet, but a Clueless TV reboot is in the works at CBS. And, get this, it won’t even be a dram-com like the ’90s cult classic! The return of Cher Horowitz and friends is being pegged as a dramatic mystery. How dramatic? Well, rumor has it Cher may not even return in the adaptation, because the series starts when she goes missing and her BFF Dionne steps in to fill her fabulous shoes.
As first reported by Deadline, the hourlong TV series is already getting quite a bit of interest from streaming services as well as the CW. And, really, there’s no surprise there — judging by the description of the reboot, it would vibe well with the network’s moody millennial series like Riverdale and The 100. If that doesn’t clue you into the show’s potential aesthetic, let us fill in the blanks. It is described as “a baby-pink and bisexual blue-tinted, tiny sunglasses-wearing, oat milk latte and Adderall-fueled look at what happens when the high school queen bee Cher disappears and her lifelong No. 2 Dionne steps into Cher’s vacant Air Jordans,” reads the series logline.
Also worth noting? The story seemingly shifts its center to Dionne, as she adjusts to life at the top of the social food pyramid and tries to figure out what happened to her best friend. Take all of that, throw in a dash of Lizzo-music-video-vibes and a little Mean Girls, and set it in 2020 L.A. Now you can start buggin’.
As you may well remember, there has already been one reboot of Clueless. In 1996, only a year after the iconic film hit theaters, it was turned into half-hour comedy series that ran for three seasons on ABC and two on UPN. Where it stayed faithful to the original, the new reboot will apparently swerve hard.
Understandably, the premise of the in-progress reboot may have you saying, “As if!” Don’t count it out just yet, though. If you’re a fan of the darker direction Riverdale steered the Archie comics, you might be a fan of this reboot if it pulls off the same. Plus, there’s always the possibility of the film’s favorite original stars — Alicia Silverstone, Paul Rudd, Donald Faison and Breckin Meyer — working their way into the adaptation, much like ’80s sweetheart Molly Ringwald and ’90s star Skeet Ulrich have found their way to Riverdale.
Then again, the reboot could turn out to be a total Monet. In which case, we’re Audi!
