DIY SOS star Jason Liversidge has died at the age of 47 after a 10-year battle with motor neurone disease (MND).
The father-of-two, who appeared on the BBC show in 2015 and had his home transformed into an accessible family house by Nick Knowles and the team, died on August, 5.
His death was announced by his wife Liz on Facebook, who wrote: ‘Jason Liversidge died peacefully at home surrounded by his girls at 22.59 on the 5th August 2023. Thank you for being the best husband and father that we could ask for.
‘You will be forever young and remain alive always in our hearts and minds. We love you! Fly free my love.’
Liversidge was diagnosed in 2013 and, determined not to let the illness hold him back, he has previously scaled Mount Snowdon in a wheelchair and abseiled off the Humber Bridge in Hull.
In 2020, Liversidge, who was 95% paralysed, broke a Guinness World Record after reaching almost 65mph in a motorised wheelchair.
Liz said at the time: ‘It was really nerve-wracking watching him trying to break this world record, but mainly because I was watching him wondering if it was fast enough.
‘It was also a really cold day, and because he’s immobile he gets very, very cold quite quickly so we weren’t sure he was even going to be able to do it.
In 2017, Liversidge, who had trouble walking, swallowing and talking due to MND, had a personalised synthesiser made to save his voice.
The Anne Rowling Clinic in Edinburgh created a synthesiser with a Yorkshire accent, which was believed to be the first ever with a regional voice.
Liversidge previously told the BBC: ‘It’s going to make the world of difference, as I know it’s me and therefore it’s a daily reminder of what I sounded like.’
According to the NHS, MND is an uncommon condition that affects the brain and nerves that causes weakness that gets worse over time.
It said there was no cure for MND, but there are treatments to help reduce the impact it has on a person’s daily life.
