ESENES WORLDWIDE had a viral moment with footwear connoisseurs and Pokémon fanatics alike last August thanks to its “Boneheads,” EVA foam clogs with a shape inspired by the Ground-type Pokémon Cubone’s famous helmet — horns and all. Now, in 2023, what was once a sample is now a reality as the “Boneheads” are set for an official release later this month.
The brand’s design language is inherently playful and often riffs off established silhouettes or characters, an ethos that’s helped it find fans like Angus Cloud, Guapdad 4000, MadeinTYO and DJ Mustard. Past releases like their “Wildfires” are a flaming homage to the Nike SB Dunk Low while their “Loose Screw” headwear warps the logo of MLB teams to a light-hearted effect. The “Boneheads” aren’t quite as on-the-nose as their predecessors but do provide a silhouette that’s easy to recognize for any Pokémon fan. They’ll be dropping in a fittingly bone-colored hue, and, besides the horns protruding from the rear, feature details like bulbous toebox overlays and a toothed outsole pattern across their full EVA build.
Cubone may be known as the “Lonely Pokémon” because of its antisocial nature — in an uncommonly macabre piece of Pokémon lore, the skull it wears is actually its dead mother’s — but the playful “Boneheads” are anything but sullen. They’re set to release via the ESENES WORLDWIDE webstore on February 21, and will be priced at $99 USD. Interested parties can also head to the webstore now to sign up for pre-order text alerts.
