Glenn Close forced to miss Oscars after testing positive for Covid-19

Sadly, there will be a Glenn Close-shaped hole at this year’s Oscars.

The actress was set to present at the 2023 ceremony on Sunday, March 12, alongside a plethora of stars such as Dwayne Johnson, Cara Delevingne, Harrison Ford, Eva Longoria, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Elizabeth Olsen, Pedro Pascal, and John Travolta.

Emily Blunt, Jessica Chastain, Ariana DeBose, Danai Gurira, Salma Hayek Pinault, Samuel L. Jackson, Nicole Kidman, Janelle Monáe, and more are also set to hand out gongs.

Alas, Glenn, 75, has tested positive for Covid-19.

A representative for the movie star confirmed the news, stating that she will have to miss the annual bash.

The award-winning star is now isolating and resting, but there’s been no immediate word on who will replace her as a presenter.

This isn’t the first time one of the 40 presenters of the Oscars has had to bow out.

Last year, Oscar nominee Lin-Manuel Miranda had to skip the show after his wife tested positive for Covid-19.

As for Glenn, she’s never actually won an Oscar of her own.

That doesn’t mean she hasn’t been recognised, though, as she’s actually been nominated eight times for an Academy Award, holding the record for the most nominations in an acting category without a win (tied with Peter O’Toole).

Her most recent nom came in 2021 for best supporting actress for her role in Hillbilly Elegy, which could have knocked her off the doomed list.

But, it wasn’t meant to be, with Glenn losing out to south Korean actress Youn Yuh-jung.

As for the 2023 awards, the grand finale of the traditional awards show season will take place live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California.

The nominations were announced in January this year, with nods for Austin Butler for his dedicated performance as Elvis Presley in the recent biopic, and Colin Farrell for The Banshees of Inisherin in the best actor category.

But they face stiff competition from The Whale’s Brendan Fraser, the legend that is Bill Nighy for Living, and last but not least, a very emotional Paul Mescal, for his touching ode to fatherhood in Aftersun.

Meanwhile, the best actress category recognises Cate Blanchett for Tár, Ana de Armas for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in Blonde, Michelle Williams for The Fabelmans, Everything Everywhere All at Once’s Michelle Yeoh, and Andrea Riseborough for her role in low-budget indie film To Leslie.

The big one, best picture, is also sure to be a tense moment, as nominations include war epic All Quiet on the Western Front, the hotly-anticipated Avatar: The Way of Water, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Fabelmans, Tár, Top Gun: Maverick, Triangle of Sadness and Women Talking.

Jimmy Kimmel is hosting the Oscars this weekend for the third time, making him only the fifth person to be the solo host of the Oscars at least three times.
