Jada Pinkett Smith hoping for 'answers' after arrest in Tupac Shakur murder

Jada Pinkett Smith is hoping to gain ‘closure’ now an arrest has been made in connection with the murder of Tupac Shakur.

The hip-hop star was involved in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996, at the age of 25.

Sitting in the passenger’s seat of a BMW, the musician was waiting at a red light when someone in a white Cadillac opened fire on him.

Shakur died a week later from multiple gunshot wounds, with a man arrested and charged this week on one count of murder with a deadly weapon.

Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis, 60, is the uncle of Orlando Anderson, who is said to have been involved in a casino brawl with Shakur and was one of his known rivals.

Pinkett Smith, 52, has now said she hopes the arrest of Davis – who previously spoke publicly about being a witness to the shooting – will bring ‘answers’.

Taking to her Instagram Story, the American actress – who is married to Will Smith – shared a black screen with text written on.

‘Now I hope we can get some answers and have some closure,’ penned the Red Table Talk host.

She added: ‘R.I.P. Pac,’ followed by a dove emoji.

Pinkett Smith and Shakur were close friends, having met at the Baltimore School of the Arts in Maryland.

She previously said he ‘came over to me and introduced himself’ on the first day.

‘Definitely from looking at him, wasn’t necessarily the type of cat that I would even like, deal with,’ she recalled in an interview.

‘But as soon as he approached me, he was like a magnet.

‘Once you paid attention to him he kind of sucked you in. And we hit it off from that moment on.’

She described Shakur as a ‘brother’ and ‘father figure’ to her.

‘The type of relationship we had, you only get that once in a lifetime, she added emotionally.

Pinkett Smith also once revealed that she and Shakur shared a kiss, but they decided to remain friends.

‘When you have two young people that have very strong feelings… but there was no physical chemistry between us at all,’ she told Howard Stern.

Meanwhile, police officers have said it’s taken ‘countless hours’ and ‘decades’ to get to this point in the case of Shakur’s murder.

Speaking in a press conference following Davis’ arrest, 27 years after the rapper’s death, the lead officer said: ‘Some people did not believe that the murder of Tupac Shakur was important to this police department, that was not the case back then and that is not the case today.

‘Our goal has always been to hold those accountable for Tupac’s violent murder.

‘Every life that is lost is important and remains a priority for this police department.’

The arrest on Friday (September 30) is said to have come two months after Las Vegas police raided a home in connection to the murder.

In a statement shared with Metro.co.uk at the time, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) said: ‘LVMPD can confirm a search warrant was served in Henderson, Nevada on July 17, 2023, as part of the ongoing Tupac Shakur homicide investigation.’
