Kuala Lumpur’s JOE CHIA — founded by Joe Chia and Melissa Deng — has just announced an upcoming collaboration with mastermind Japan. What started off as an appreciation for a sweater worn by a buyer at Chia’s studio, has turned into a four-piece capsule collection with Masaaki Homma, five years later.
Comprised of the Lintas Jacket, 117 Turenne Sweater, IMA T-Shirt, and Caya Drop Crotch Pants, the capsule celebrates both labels’ appreciation for details, craftsmanship, and dark palettes. At the center of the collection is the piece that started it all — the 117 Turenne Sweater. This piece was inspired by the Fall/Winter 2016 “Not Afraid” collection but has been updated with stainless-steel aglets on the drawstrings.
“It was a tale across three cities: Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, and Paris. When Mr. Homma from mastermind JAPAN asked about our hooded sweater that was worn by a buyer in his showroom, our relationship began upon mutual introduction. We would visit each other and catch up over dinner season after season in Tokyo and Paris,” explains creative director, Joe Chia. “To understand mastermind JAPAN is to view the collections up close in person and recognize his clever attention to detail, construction, and material.”
Other items like the Lintas Harrington Jacket see details like a reversible silk lining in printed batik. Details continue on in the form of mastermind JAPAN’s signature D-rings, zipper, buttons, and embroidered logos. Priced from €270 – €800 EUR (approximately $290 – $860 USD), this collection releases exclusively at Isetan The Japan Store Kuala Lumpur on June 10 with a Global release on JOE CHIA’s web store on June 17.
