For LaQuan Smith, regal fashion shows are a brand identity at this point. What shifted the presentation tides for the designer was his SS22 runway show that took over the Empire State Building – the first to do so. After showing at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum last season, the designer moved to the Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center for his Fall/Winter 2023 show.
As guests overlooked New York City in typical LaQuan Smith fashion, the collection’s identity took form with the force of high glam. Well, Smith’s collection are typically glamorous by nature due to his body-con and body-exposing party-ready designs. But this time collection upped the ante on contemporarily chic designs.
For the first time, tailoring-focused designs seeped into Smith’s vision – offering up reworked dresses reimagined with tuxedo lapel detailing, a fitted black tuxedo with a backless jacket, remixed jackets and a luxe silver double-breasted skirt suit. The LaQuan Smith woman was also outfitted with the updated cutout dresses, which are a brand signature, deep neck sheer tops, a reversed blazer dress and a showstopping black tinsel turtleneck dress.
Although Smith is a committed womenswear designer, menswear pieces came into the mix this season in full force – mirroring the chic qualities of the Smith woman. Tailored pants were paired with buttonless open-chest tops, silk suiting featured subtle blazer side cutouts, shearling jackets featured exaggerated proportions and suiting met sexy with sheer tops. Overcoats served as menswear highlights between a wide-lapel baby blue piece and a show-stopping oversized furry brown coat.
