Missy Elliott now has the highest number of platinum records amongst all female rappers.
Chart Data announced that all six of the hip-hop legend’s studio albums are certified platinum or higher, as her 2005 record — and her latest album so far — The Cookbook sold over one million units in late January. Elliott acknowledged the feat on Twitter and shared her support to all her “sisters in hip-hop” to continue their work. “This is a HUGE MILESTONE! No matter how long it took to get here I am here & I AM HUMBLY GRATEFUL,” she tweeted. “To all my SISTERS in HIP HOP y’all keep doing y’all thang & SHINING.”
Over the past two years, Elliott has been given major awards for her influential and decade-spanning career. In 2019, she became the first female rapper to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and was named the recipient of the MTV VMAs Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award for her groundbreaking music videos, and in 2021, she was honored with her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Elsewhere in music, Wale pulled out of the Broccoli City Fest lineup just hours after the list of performers was announced.
