Iain Dale has spoken about breaking his hip in an accident in a tube station in London – and how not one person stopped to ask if he was alright.
The broadcaster underwent hip replacement surgery last month after he tripped at the top of an escalator at Charing Cross Station, suffering a ‘badly’ broken hip.
He told fans at the time he was taken to St Thomas’ Hospital via ambulance, and thanked doctors and nurses for their ‘superb’ care.
Now Iain has spoken about the accident itself, and how he was left lying on the floor with a broken hip while people ignored him and carried on going for their trains.
The former Conservative Party candidate, 60, appeared on Good Morning Britain on Friday with Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway where he explained he was going through Charing Cross when he ‘fell flat on my face’ at the top of the gates.
‘I lay there for about a minute and the really worrying thing was not a single person stopped to see if I was okay,’ the LBC presenter revealed.
‘I find that quite shocking, I’m not sure that would happen anywhere else.’
Iain went on to say that ambulance staff and London Underground staff came to help and were brilliant, but they needed to carry him up a ‘very narrow stairwell’ to get him out to the waiting ambulance.
At the same time, ‘there were still people coming out of the very narrow stairwell to get to Trafalgar Square… people were trying to push past as [ambulance] and London Underground staff were trying to lift me out.’
Hosts Ben and Kate were shocked by the behaviour of the public who had ignored Iain, even as the broadcaster accepted people have places they need to be.
Before Kate joked that the people might have realised Iain was a West Ham fan and left him on the floor for that reason – while Ben suggested everyone passing him by could have been LBC listeners.
Despite the fairly harrowing story, and the fact he’s still recovering from a hip replacement surgery at home, Iain was in great form during the interview, with the hosts going on to thank him for being a ray of sunshine amid all the bad news in the world.
