It was pretty obvious the rumours were true but a remastered version of Quake 2 is now available on all formats.
As predicted, the remaster was released to coincide with QuakeCon and is now ready to download from online stores for the very reasonable sum of £7.99.
The remaster offers 4K resolution (except on Switch, obviously) and widescreen support, as well as online and local multiplayer – including cross-play and split-screen.
You also get both original mission packs, and a new one called Call Of The Machine, by Wolfenstein developer MachineGames. There’s even a version of Quake 2 64 thrown in for free.
MachineGames have made new mission packs for both the Quake 1 and 2 remasters and there’s been a lot of speculation that they might be working on a reboot of the series.
There’s no confirmation of that yet, but you never known – it’s possible there may be an announcement at QuakeCon in the coming days.
Original story:
It sounds like the Quake 2 remaster is very real, which could support the rumours of id Software and MachineGames making a brand new entry.
Remember when a ratings board leaked the existence of a Quake remaster and then it was officially unveiled not long after, at ZeniMax Media’s yearly QuakeCon event?
Well, it seems history is about to repeat itself. In June, a listing for a Quake 2 remaster was spotted on the South Korean ratings board, strongly suggesting that a formal announcement was imminent.
Now, a very reliable leaker claims that said announcement will take place, unsurprisingly, during QuakeCon 2023 next week, either on August 10 (the date the event starts) or on August 11.
What’s more, just like the previous remaster, it won’t be an Xbox exclusive and will launch for all modern platforms, so: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
This is according to billbil-kun over on Dealabs, who has consistently and accurately leaked the monthly PlayStation Plus game additions and, more recently, Sony’s price cut for the PlayStation 5.
With ZeniMax’s owner Microsoft now having greenlighted two Quake remasters, this adds further support to rumours of a brand-new Quake being in the works at id Software and MachineGames.
Both studios also worked on the previous Quake remaster, so the rumour is not at all farfetched. However, MachineGames is also meant to be busy with a new Wolfenstein and the Xbox exclusive Indiana Jones game.
Considering there have been no updates on either of these projects for a very long time now, it’s hard to imagine that MachineGames would add more work to their pile with a new Quake.
Juggling three big projects like this wouldn’t be easy, but given how quiet MachineGames has been these past few years, it’s difficult to tell exactly what is going on behind the scenes.
