Elevated, elegant and sexy are three appropriate words to describe the artistic fashion design approach of LaQuan Smith and his affinity for creating men’s and women’s ready-to-wear. Albeit his most recent collection did not profile any menswear items, Smith still delivered a fanciful presentation, with reinterpreted elements of nature fueling his Spring/Summer 2023 collection.
Inspired by “wind, air and movement,” Smith referenced his recent vacation to Morocco as the basis for SS23. His cadre of exquisitely primped models was outfitted in bias-cut jersey dresses, asymmetrically body-baring silhouettes, cellophane cargo pants, bejeweled lace and super-mini skirts.
Utilitarian elements also appeared on the runway in the form of safari-style jackets that were cinched at the waist, along with multi-pocket cargo compartments found on barely-there skirts and low-rise cargo pants.
With styling from industry veteran Patti Wilson, music by Diplo, and supermodels including Winnie Harlow and Cindy Bruna strutting the catwalk, it’s safe to say that Smith hit his stride with this season’s presentation.
Sharing the backstory for his runway delivery, Smith says: “My Spring/Summer 2023 collection is about wind, air and movement. I took a trip this summer to Morocco and was completely inspired by the weather and the rich colors in the spice market. The collection also has many elements of eroticism – poetic and romantic.”
