After a careful, yet highly anticipated deliberation, S.S.DALEY has won the 2022 LVMH Prize. Based in London, Steven Stokey-Daley’s eponymous label stood out to this year’s jury leaders which included Jonathan Anderson, Kim Jones, Maria Grazia Chiuri, Nicolas Ghesquière, Stella McCartney, Delphine Arnault, Sidney Toledano, Nigo, Jean-Paul Claverie and Silvia Venturini Fendi.
As the grand prize winner, Daley will receive €300,000 EUR (approximately $322,000 USD) and personalized assistance from LVMH for a year. Since its debut solo runway show during London Fashion Week for the Spring/Summer 2022 season, S.S.DALEY has been very direct about evolving hyper-masculine dress notes. “I think that conversation is always ongoing. With our next collection, we’ve pushed that boundary more,” Daley told HYPEBEAST when asked about furthering this brand aesthetic. “I think winning the prize will bring a whole new audience to me, which will therefore spread that message.”
Additionally, this year’s Karl Lagerfeld Prize made history as it was awarded to two designers for the first time. ERL by Eli Russell Linnetz and WINNIE New York by Idris Balogun took home this year’s prize. Each designer will receive €150,000 (approximately $161,000 USD) and a year of mentorship from LVMH.
As both are American brands, the elevated platform represents a significant opportunity to expand menswear. “To be here with Eli is such an interesting dynamic to think about the choice from the judges and how the industry imagines the direction it’s going,” Balogun told HYPEBEAST. “I’ve always been a protector of myself and my brand. Even though this is an amazing opportunity to project us, I think it’s going to project that idea of slow fashion, paying attention to what you’re making and the stories you’re telling.”
