With the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic now well underway, the IOC has offered up a closer look at this year’s medal designs.
Entitled “Tong Xin” — which translates to “together as one” — each of the gold, silver and bronze medals adorns a design based on Chinese ancient jade concentric circle pendants, with the rings representing Olympic spirit and the unification of people.
Under the guidelines of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games’ “streamlined, safe and splendid” games, each design is both simple and classic, and is a nod back to the jade-inlaid medals of the country’s 2008 summer games.
On the reverse of the medal, the emblem of the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 is accompanied by the Chinese translation and the name of that particular event. The ring is concave, with the shallow carved designs alongside it based on traditional Chinese patterns.
In other Olympics news, Shaun White has announced he’ll be retiring after this years’ games.
