The news has shocked people who knew Crean over his time as president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions, as a minister under former prime minister Paul Keating, as federal Labor leader from 2001 to 2003, and a cabinet minister from 2007 to 2013.

Crean spent three years as trade minister under prime minister Kevin Rudd from 2007 to 2010 and used the position to commit Australia to removing trade barriers.
