Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Hocus Pocus’ Tribute Does Bette Midler’s Character Justice

Kelly Clarkson might have just won Halloween. She starts each episode of her new talk show by covering a different song in a segment titled Kellyoke, and her song choice for Thursday’s Halloween-themed episode did not disappoint. Clarkson performed a Hocus Pocus tribute that would make Bette Midler proud.

Clarkson kicked off her Halloween show with a haunting cover of "I Put A Spell On You," dressed up as none other than Winifred Sanderson, Midler’s iconic character from Hocus Pocus. Her backup singers served as her witch sisters, Mary and Sarah (originally played by Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker). Their costumes were impeccable, especially Clarkson’s screaming orange updo.

Rather than performing Midler’s famous rendition of the spooky track, Clarkson opted to cover the original ’50s hit by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins — and frankly, it may have been the right choice. Her raspy voice and those immaculate high notes took the song to the next level. Between the expertly decorated stage, the creepy zombie bellhops, and the witches’ laissez-faire approach in moving around the stage, Clarkson succeeded in putting a spell on all of us.

Keeping the Halloween spirit going, Clarkson (still decked in her Hocus Pocus garb) joined guest Lindsey Stirling for a rousing rendition of the violinist’s song "The Upside." Clarkson made her heavenly vocals spooky twice within an hour, showing off both her talent and her commitment to the holiday.

Before the episode, The Kelly Clarkson Show Instagram shared a photo of Clarkson and her backup singers in their scarily witchy costumes, tagging the original stars Midler, Parker, and Najimy. "’Oh look. Another glorious morning. Makes me SICK!’ It’s just a bunch of #HocusPocus on today’s #Halloween show," the caption read. None of the original Sanderson sisters have responded to the performance yet, but it’s safe to say they’d give it two broomsticks up.

If you can’t get enough Hocus Pocus this season, you’re also in luck. Not only is Freeform airing the film all day long on Halloween, but Disney+ just announced they’re developing a new Hocus Pocus movie. Was Clarkson’s electrifying tribute actually her low-key audition tape for the streaming service’s film? Between the talk show and her stint on The Voice, Clarkson’s schedule is likely too busy, but she already proved she’d be a perfect fit.
