Animal rescuers were heartbroken after a cat marked its 7th anniversary at an animal rescue shelter without receiving even a single adoption application since her arrival.
Gray Belle is just as affectionate as other cats at Chesapeake Feline Association (CFA), but according to staff she is terribly misunderstood.
Over the seven years that she’s been at the shelter, Gray Belle has seen many of her feline friends leave with their adoptive families, many of which had calmer demeanors than her.
Because she is more susceptible to loud noises than the other cats, she flees at the sound of visitors walking into the shelter and has done so for the seven years she’s been at CFA.
The coordinator of the Shelter, Kim Roman, told the Dodo: “We were hoping to find an adopter who could see past Grey Belle’s nervousness and fears of the unknown and see what a wonderful but independent cat she is. They didn’t understand her personality.

“We don’t really have a history for her, but I can tell you she was scared and not social at all. We joke that if she doesn’t like you, you knew that she didn’t like you.”
Gray Belle was a stray cat before being welcomed by the shelter in 2016, yet the caregivers know little about her background.
The staff wanted her to feel instantly at ease in the shelter, but they knew she’d need time to warm up to her new environment.
Eventually, they started luring her in with treats, which helped many of them get close enough to pet her, but she is still reluctant to let her guard down completely.

“She’d watch us from a distance up on a shelf, but she began to realize that we were there to provide food,” recalled Roman.
Approximately 2,808 days into Grey Belle’s stay at the shelter, she received an unexpected visit from a local man who specifically asked specifically to see her.
He sat beside her to feed her treats, respecting her boundaries as she drew closer. It was immediately clear to onlookers that he was the right person to adopt Belle Gray.
Not only did he ask to bring her home, but he went to the length of finding out which of the others cats Gray Belle had an affinity with.
Caregivers immediately thought of Carrot, another shy cat at the shelter, and the two left with their new owner that very same day.
Roman noted: “They’re settling in nicely and have even been caught cuddling. Their dad’s even been able to pet Gray Belle several times a day, if only briefly. It’s brought us a lot of comforts known how kind and patient her adopter is.”
