Neighbours star Kym Valentine reveals she is a victim of domestic violence

Former Neighbours star Kym Valentine has revealed that she is a victim of domestic violence.

The actress, best known for playing Libby Kennedy in the popular Australian soap, opened up that she was at the hands of ‘physical, psychological, emotional and financial’ family violence.

‘I have had at various times in my life experience with all these elements of domestic violence,’ she told The Daily Telegraph Australia.

She also stated that as a result of her experiences, she hasdecided to join the Victim Survivors’ Advisory Council, in order to help otherswho went through similar situations.

‘There were moments when I was looking around for options andI couldn’t find many, so I know what that feels like,’ she continued. ‘It kindof feels like you are in quick sand and are reaching out for support.

‘You wake up in a life you did not choose and that is terrifyingto realise.’

Kym first appeared as Libby in Neighbours in 1994, however she went on indefinite leave from the show in 2011 due to ill health. She would later return for a brief guest stint in 2014.

During her time on the show, Libby was featured in many storylines including being involved in a motorbike accident, the loss of her on-screen husband Drew Kirk and marrying Daniel Fitzgerald, before separating from him.

As well as Neighbours, Kym has gone on to have a successful career, both on stage and in film.

She has appeared in Dirty Dancing on stage in Sydney, and also recently starred in the films The Grand Scheme and Choir Girl.

The 42-year-old is also a mother to two children: 16-year-old daughter Milana and four-year-old son Phoenix.
