Ready for a Valentine’s Day work out? ‘Sexercise’ calculator shows love-making positions that burn the most calories – from the energetic ‘butter churner’ to a more sedate ‘spooning’
- Best sex positions for burning calories can be easily calculated using new tool
- UK company FROM MARS created the calculator using research on sex
- The ‘butter churner’ can burn the most energy, using around 100 cals in 15 mins
- But the laid-back ‘cowgirl’ clocks in at just a measly 20 calories per session
A new sexercise calculator shows which positions are likely to burn the most calories during a steamy Valentine’s Day romp.
The calculator works out the best between the sheets work-outs by taking the number of minutes spent in common sexual positions and multiplying them by the number of calories each position burns.
Curious lovers can calculate their potential energy burn in 12 different positions, including the ambitious-looking ‘butter churner’, the ‘squat’, and the ‘kneeling wheelbarrow’.
According to UK company FROM MARS, which created the calculator, there is a huge variation in the possible energy burn depending on what position you opt for in the bedroom (or anywhere else).
Those enjoying a steamy romp this Valentine’s Day could also burn some serious energy, according to a calculator which works out which positions lose the most calories
Spooning only uses around 51 calories per 15 minutes of sex, according to the calculator, which lists the ‘butter churner’ as the most energetic position for men
Clocking in with the highest burn is the butter churner, which can use up around 211 calories in 30 minutes of sex, which is equivalent to seven calories per minute.
The position takes its name from the butter churner, an old-fashioned device with a whipping type tool which sits above the butter and dips into it to soften it.
Described as a position for those ‘brave enough to try it’, this manoeuvre, which is also known as the ‘squat thruster’, involves the woman lying on her back with her legs raised above and behind her head, with the man penetrating her from above.
Another option which uses a lot of energy is standing up, which burns 6.6 calories per minute of sex.
FROM MARS has created a calculator showing how many calories you can burn while having sex in different positions. These calculations show the energy burn of 15 minutes’ romping
However, as FROM MARS notes, this position has one of the lowest orgasm rates for women, at just 17 per cent.
Unfortunately, the position that burns the least calories is cowgirl, which will only burn around 1.3 calories per minute or 39 calories for every 30 minutes.
Doggy styles comes in at third place, burning 182 calories for men during 30 minutes of activity. Women burn around 103 calories in the same time.

As a major bonus, research has shown that doggy style is the position that makes most women orgasm (79 per cent).
While the calculator shows men how many calories they can burn, it is based on previous research which worked out how much energy both men and women use up during sex.
The research, based on a survey of 112 couples with Fitbits, found that the squat position was the most effective for women when it comes to using up calories, burning 188 in half an hour.
This was followed by the ‘butter churner’, which is almost as energetic for women as men, with a possible burn of around 179 calories per half hour.
Meanwhile, the ‘kneeling wheelbarrow’ clocks in at third place for women, burning approximately 149 and 167 calories respectively.
