Pole challenge is latest viral trend – but can you get out of it?

Could YOU get out of it? Viral pole challenge sees people trying to wriggle free after crossing their legs around a pole – and it’s a LOT harder than it looks

  • Prank starts when someone straddles a lamppost in a cross legged position
  • They are then lowered to the ground by a friend and must climb up again
  • A builder took on the prank on a housing estate in Darlington, County Durham
  • Other videos show men trying out the challenge with most getting stuck on floor
  • Prank dates to World War II and was a restraint technique called The Grape Vine

If someone invites you to try a viral challenged involving wrapping yourself around a lamp post, you might want to refuse because escaping is a lot hard than you might imagine.

The challenge, which has recently resurfaced on social media, involves straddling a pole and sitting down in a cross legged position.

Using your upper body strength to pull yourself up to standing is the only means of escape, and people from around the UK are posting their attempts on social media, with hilarious results.

Earlier today a video emerged of a builder in County Durham, who got himself into a knotty situation, with his legs wrapped around a lamppost, after his workmates played a prank on him.

Other videos show similar attempts to make it out of the cross-legged position, with most failing.

The prank is pulled off by convincing someone to straddle a lamppost before lowering them to the ground with their legs crossed.

Unless the victim has extreme upper body strength, they must be lifted out of the position by two other people.

The prank should not be attempted without people on hand to get the victim out of the position.

The footage of the builder shows him take on the prank at a housing estate in Darlington, County Durham.

Another video of a man shows him laughing as he attempts to make his way up the pole – but he gets stuck

An american tourist (left), and his friend (right), who look like they are on a night out attempt the challenge, but neither get too far up the pole

His friend posted the video and said: ‘My workmate was adamant he would be able to get himself out of it but he was wrong.’

And his workmates are left in hysterics as the builder tries to hoist himself up from the ground when he cannot untangle his legs from the lamppost.

He says: ‘You can’t get back up can you? Before his friend pushes his shoulders down to make the task even harder.

‘How do you get up? I’ll see you tomorrow’, he says as his workmates walk away laughing.

After watching him struggle, his workmates decide to pull him up and run over to the foolish builder. One builder attempts to lift him up but his legs remain knotted around the lamppost. He says: ‘You are snapping my ankles!’

Another builder counts him in and tries to pull the man up but fails again to release his tangled legs.

Finally two builders set him free by holding a knee each and pulling him up.

The man stumbles to his feet on the building site and still appears in good spirits despite the embarrassment.

Other videos see men attempting the challenge, with friends helping them up on to the posts, and gently lower them.

Some of the friends gently mock them as they find themselves in uncomfortable positions and almost tied to the lampposts.

However, after a few minutes of finding themselevs in the position and unable to get out friends relive them.

The prank dates back to the World War II and is derived from a restraint technique called The Grape Vine used by special forces.

After 15 minutes in the unbearable position, cramp sets in, causing the person to release their hands to relieve the pain.

This puts pressure on the rib cage and restricts breathing, which causes the person to pass out.
