Watch Australia’s Elite Bondi Beach Lifeguards Handle Drunk Partygoers

Mixing salty ocean water, pristine sand, and cold booze might sound fun, but it can be pretty dangerous in excess. And these Australian beachgoers are definitely crossing the line.

In a clip from the popular show Bondi Rescue, Australia’s elite Bondi Beach lifeguards rescue drunk patrons wreaking havoc on the famous beach. Drinking is actually illegal on Bondi, though it’s difficult to enforce, which is apparent from this particular segment of the famous show. Lifeguards often must deal with drunk and disorderly beach patrons fighting with friends, other beachgoers, lifeguards, and police.

The video includes the rescue of an underage drinker who took on water while swimming. The teen needs medical assistance after the scare, with pain in his chest and stomach from water inhalation.

“I’m never drinking when I swim again at all,” the teen’s friend says after the rescue. His friend is taken to the hospital, while his friends receive a fine for underage drinking.

Soon after, the guards handle a group of drunk friends who are “paralytic and pissing people off,” and a woman who does a full front-flip on the beach from stumbling. A particularly creative lifeguard says she’s just “like Bambi on ice.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever seem anyone so drunk one the beach ever,” the lifeguard says in the clip, adding, “She was so drunk that all it would take one or two waves and she could probably drown.”

In a particularly scary circumstance, some beachgoers report a woman missing after noticing her bag and an empty bottle of wine unattended for hours. Eventually, a chopper comes to search for the 37-year-old woman, who has suicidal tendencies.

“It’s unusual the chopper comes,” the head lifeguard says. “It doesn’t come that many times a year unless it’s a pretty critical situation.”

After some particularly tense minutes of air and land search, the guards find the intoxicated woman sleeping soundly far up the beach. Thankfully, she’ll probably just end up with a killer sunburn and a pounding headache.

The moral of the story: Don’t drink and swim, folks.
