JAMES, 37

My dating past

I split with my ex-boyfriend in December last year after four-and-a-half years, but we decided to stay friends. I prefer long-term relationships. Dating is fun, but I’m looking for something serious. I’ve been on some socially distanced dates this year, but a global pandemic hasn’t made it easy.

Pre-date nerves?

I wasn’t too nervous, thankfully. These days, I just plan to enjoy all my dates.

First impressions

VITAL STATISTICS

Single for eight months, no children.

CURRENT ROLE

Make-up artist, currently furloughed.

WOULD LIKE TO MEET

A handsome , masculine guy who is spiritually minded and fun-loving. I’m drawn to intelligence, but a sense of humour is a must. I’m not looking for a drama queen.

Ad was already at the bar when I arrived, so we sat and had a drink. I thought he was handsome and liked how he was dressed in a smart waistcoat. He’s friendly, so it felt relaxed from the start.

Easy to talk to?

We started talking about meditation early on. It was lovely to discover he has a spiritual side. He told me he is a clairvoyant who has had frequent premonitions and dreams that have come true.

For example, he was once half-asleep when he heard a voice telling him to give his friends £40. Later that morning, a friend called asking for a loan.

I told Ad how I have been studying tarot during lockdown. It was so refreshing to speak about these things without people calling you crazy. He also told me how he cares for his mum. I admire that.

Any embarrassing moments?

No, not really. There was one moment when Ad suggested we link arms to drink our drinks. It felt a bit weird, but was harmless enough and quite sweet.

Did sparks fly?

JAMES’S VERDICT: 7/10

LIKED ? He was charming, intelligent and kind.

REGRETS ? No.

COFFEE OR CAB? Coffee.

I didn’t feel any chemistry but I’d like to stay friends because he is a kind, interesting guy. We did go for a drink afterwards and swapped contact details. It took me a while to realise there wasn’t a spark, but we were having such a lovely time it didn’t matter.

Would you like to meet him again?

I would definitely meet him again if he came to London.

What do you think he thought of you?

It’s hard to tell as he was charming, polite and sweet. He suggested going for a drink, so I’m not sure if that was because he felt something towards me.

Would you like to take him home to your family?

He would get on well with my circle of friends.

Aditya, 39, (pictured) who has been single for ten years, is a customs service officer

ADITYA, 39

My dating past

I’ve had one serious relationship of about five months, but have been more or less single for about ten years. My mum has been quite ill and I am her part-time carer, so that has made it harder to meet someone. I don’t want to spend the next decade being single, so I’m making more of an effort now.

Pre-date nerves?

I was nervous, mostly because it was my first blind date, although I do tend to get butterflies often.

First impressions?

I arrived 25 minutes early to have a drink. When James walked in, I liked the look of him immediately. He wore a smart black top and blazer with shiny shoes. He has gorgeous platinum white hair, which I was jealous of. As soon as we shook hands, my nerves eased.

VITAL STATISTICS

Single for ten years, no children.

CURRENT ROLE

Customs service officer.

WOULD LIKE TO MEET

A good , honest bloke with a nice smile who makes others laugh. I don’t like moody men or control freaks. While I enjoy tai chi, I’m also interested in spirituality and I meditate.

Easy to talk to?

James was well-mannered and funny and I was delighted to discover we share an interest in meditation and spirituality. I am a clairvoyant and he has been studying tarot, so it was great to be able to share our experiences. I also talked about how I work part-time because I care for my mum and he was understanding. As I’m from Birmingham, I asked James all about living in London.

Any embarrassing moments?

Not really, thankfully.

Did sparks fly?

I’m 6 ft 4 in and James is 5 ft 3 in, so I’m probably too tall for him. He’s good-looking and we got on well — we both felt like old souls. But there wasn’t a sexual chemistry between us; you just know in your gut, don’t you?

It felt like I was catching up with an old friend. After dinner, we went for a drink and he walked me to the Tube. We agreed to keep in touch, which I’m happy about.

Would you like to meet him again?

I would meet up with him. I’m delighted to have made a friend in London who shares my interests.

ADITYA’S VERDICT: 7/10

LIKED ? He made a big effort.

REGRETS ? Being so nervous.

COFFEE OR CAB? Coffee and cocktails.

What do you think he thought of you?

I think he thought I treated him like a gentleman.

Would you Like to take him home to your family?

He would get on with my friends and, next time I’m in town, or if he comes to Birmingham, I would go for cocktails with him.
