BTS totally dominated the Mnet Asian Music Awards, winning all four Daesang (grand awards).
The K-pop group were honoured as Artist of the Year at the awards at the Nayoga Dome in Japan, and after the record-breaking year they had, it’s no real surprise.
BTS snapped up the first grand award of the night, beating BLACKPINK, EXO, TWICE and SEVENTEEN to see Map Of The Soul: Persona named Album of the Year.
Jimmy Fallon announced the band as the winner of the big award, saying he owned all of BTS’s albums and that he ‘loved this band so much’.
Upon winning the gong, the group promised a new album, with Jimin saying: ‘First of all, thank you so much Jimmy Fallon for the special appearance. Also, we’re currently preparing for our next album. I think we’ll be able to come and show you an album.’
RM, Jimin, Suga, Jungkook, Jin, J-Hope and V also won the Worldwide Icon award after winning the most support in the fan vote.
RM said: ‘Every ARMY watching this, you guys gave us this title and you guys gave us the world.
‘This year we released an album called Persona and you guys gave us our persona. We love you ARMYs.’
As the night drew to a close, BTS’s Boy With Luv ft Halsey was named Song of the Year, beating Kill This Love by BLACKPINK, Tempo by EXO, Fancy by Twice and Gotta Go by Chungha.
And finally, the boys seemed overwhelmed as they were named Artist of the Year, beating BLACKPINK, EXO, TWICE and Chungha.
The band started their winning streak before the show had even begun, being told on the red carpet that they had won Best Music Video for Boy With Luv ft Halsey.
The stars went on to win Best Male Group, Favourite Male Artist and Best Dance Performance (Male Group) for Boy With Luv.
BTS were also one of the 10 acts named as Worldwide Fan’s Choice, with GOT7, SEVENTEEN, TXT, TWICE, ATEEZ, MONSTA X, BLACKPINK, EXO and X1.
The latter three artists were not in attendance at MAMA 2019 – with X1 skipping the show amid the controversy surrounding the Produce x 101 voting scandal.
TXT, or Tomorrow x Together – who are label mates with BTS on Big Hit Entertainment – looked particularly stunned at being announced as winners of the fan vote.
Elsewhere, it was a great night for some of K-pop’s other biggest stars, as the most exciting artists in the game were honoured.
TWICE snapped up the awards for Best Female Group and Best Dance Performance (Female Group), while Monsta X won the World Performer gong.
ITZY and TXT were named Best New Artist in the female and male categories, with MAMAMOO and GOT7 also picking up awards.
Chung Ha was named Best Female Artist, with WayV named Best New Asian Artist.
SEVENTEEN won for Breakthrough Achievement, and thanked ‘our fans all over the world, it’s all because of you guys’.
Dua Lipa was named best international artist after she performed her new single Don’t Start Now, following a snippet of New Rules by Hwasa.
The night boasted some huge performances from BTS, ITZY, TXT, Chung Ha, Monsta X, WayV, GOT7, SEVENTEEN, JY Park, Hwasa, MAMAMOO, TWICE with Oneus and ATEEZ performing an epic medley of K-pop hits.
BTS closed the night with a phenomenal performance of N.O., We Are Bulletproof Pt 2, Boy With Luv, Mikrosmos and Dionysus., while Monsta X’s performance featured Joohoney driving in in an open-top car.
