Friends star Matthew Perry took pills to keep up partying with Bruce Willis

Friends actor Matthew Perry once bought Xanax pills to "keep up" with Bruce Willis' "partying".

The Hollywood actor – who has been open about his previous drug and excessive alcohol consumption – revealed how the 100 Xanax pills helped him keep up with Bruce Willis during shooting for The Whole Nine Yards.

Matthew admitted he "desperately" wanted to be friends with Bruce and confessed that he would buy the prescription pills to help him wind down after nights out so that he could make it to set the next day.

The actor – who claimed that his addiction abuse began in 1997 – made the revelation in his explosive new memoir titled: Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing – released on Tuesday (November 1).

He noted: "So, I'd gotten The Whole Nine Yards and had embarked on a friendship with the most famous movie star on the planet, but even I knew I was drinking way too much to pull this movie off.

"Desperate measures would be needed. Some might be able to party perfectly well and still show up and do the work, but they weren't addicts like I was."

Matt's solution was to pick up the huge Xanax stash from a "friend" and said that he counted the pills out on his hotel bed and reviewed his plan.

He recalled: "This way, I can drink with Bruce and the others, but then when I'm finally alone, I can just pop one of these and go to sleep.

"I may have been a man with a plan, but I was also ignoring the fact that this was a completely lethal combination."

Matt noted that his dangerous behaviour was his and his alone and that Bruce was not responsible.

He said: "But there was a big difference between Bruce and me. Bruce was a partier; I was an addict."

He added: "Bruce has an on-off button. He can party like crazy, get a script like The Sixth Sense, stop partying, and nail the movie sober. He doesn't have the gene. He's not an addict."

Matthew says he is currently clean and has been for the last 18 months after experiencing a drug and pain-killer addiction lasting twenty years.
