She’s a singer, songwriter, dancer, flutist, and actress. And now, Lizzo is also a Grammy nominee. Let’s take a look at the awards the rising superstar is up for at the 2020 ceremony.
Lizzo is the breakout star of 2019
Chances are, before 2019, you wouldn’t have heard of Lizzo. Unless you saw her open for Haim or Florence and the Machine in 2018, or if you were one of those who stumbled across her EP Coconut Oil, which helped to earn her some early attention, you probably didn’t learn about the musician until earlier this year.
But if you haven’t spent the past several months witnessing her breakthrough, you’re now in the minority. Lizzo had an incredible year: Her older songs, like “Truth Hurts,” were featured in movies, and her new album, Cuz I Love You, climbed up the charts alongside her previous singles. She had a role in the acclaimed movie, Hustlers, and she went on tour.
Has Lizzo ever been nominated for a Grammy before?
Though she’s been making incredible music for years, Lizzo has never been nominated for any notable awards until 2019. But she came in hard this year, receiving nominations at the MTV Video Music Awards, People’s Choice Awards, American Music Awards, and more.
In fact, Lizzo just won her first big award. She took home Video of the Year for her single “Juice” and Album/Mixtape of the Year for Cuz I Love You at the Soul Trail Music Awards on Nov. 17, 2019. But there was more to come for her…
Here’s how many nominations she got
On Nov. 20, 2019, the 2020 Grammy Award nominations were announced. Not only way Lizzo nominated for the first time, but she received the most nominations of any artist, with a whopping eight total nominations.
Lizzo was nominated for Best New Artist; Album of the Year and Best Urban Contemporary Album for Cuz I Love You (Deluxe); Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance for “Truth Hurts;” Best R&B Performance for “Exactly How I Feel;” and Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Jerome.”
After the announcement, Lizzo took to Twitter to excitedly remark on the news. In a series of tweets, she wrote in all cap, “Thank you.” “This has been an incredible year for music and I’m just so thankful to even be part of it.” “We are all winners.” And “I love you. Let’s have a wonderful blessed day.” She also posted a selfie of herself on an airplane back to the U.S. in her Instagram Story.
Lizzo just finished up a tour
Why is Lizzo on a plane? Because she just finished up the European leg of her Cuz I Love You Too tour on Nov. 19, 2019. Her final show in Denmark closed out her overseas performances for the year. But that doesn’t mean that she’s done with concerts in 2019.
Lizzo is still set to perform at a number of shows this year. She performs in Nashville on Nov. 30, as well as at several of the upcoming Jingle Ball performances in Florida, Texas, California, and New York, among others.
