The father of two has been through a gruelling ordeal that saw him become the longest surviving hospital patient with coronavirus in the UK.

Good Morning Britain host Kate has been keeping fans updated about his condition since he was first hospitalised back in March 2020.

She was awarded the MBE in the New Year Honours for services to broadcasting, journalism and charity.

As well as Derek, Kate was also joined by her parents Gordon and Marilyn Garraway for the special day.

Reacting to the news on the ITV breakfast show back in January, Kate said at the time: "I actually feel very awkward about it all really, I don't know why, because I'm thrilled to bits and incredibly honoured."

She added: "But you just sort of think, 'What? Me?' And then you think it's not real."

Derek receives 24/7 care at home and it is believed he could have contracted Covid at the Prince's Trust Awards on March 11, 2020.

King Charles was in attendance and was diagnosed with coronavirus days later.

Kate previously revealed that she had got "relatively close" at the showbiz event.

She said: "Around the 29/30 March, I came home and said [to Derek] 'god you look ill'.

"He said he had a headache, numbness in his right hand, and was struggling to breathe,

"I rang Dr Hilary (Jones) and tried to get through, he talked to Derek. He said put me back on, I think you need to call an ambulance'.

Derek was later taken to hospital on March 30 where he remained unresponsive and went into a coma.

On June 5, 2020, Kate revealed Derek was free from coronavirus but continued to fight against the damage inflicted on his body.
