Adam Woodyatt and Michelle Collins recall 'constant rows' on EastEnders set

On-screen, Ian and Cindy Beale are one of the most volatile couples in soap history, let alone EastEnders.

Off-screen, however, things could get just as snappy between actors Adam Woodyatt and Michelle Collins, who admit that they have ‘mellowed’ after having ‘constant rows’ in their early days.

Adam burst onto our screens as Ian Beale during the very first episode of the BBC soap back in 1985, and was joined later by Michelle, who began playing Cindy in 1988.

During Cindy’s time in Albert Square she caused chaos aplenty with her cheating and lying, especially to poor Ian.

Some of her many questionable actions included having numerous affairs, abducting her own children and eventually hiring a hitman to take out Ian.

Now, a shock twist has seen her return from the dead, with Michelle reprising her role for the first time since 1998.

While Cindy is sure to bring a similar fire to the Square this time around, one thing has changed between Adam and Michelle now that they’re working together again.

‘We talk about what it was like in the old days. We would row coming out of our dressing rooms, we would row going to the set, we would row on set and then we’d row coming off set. We spent our whole life kind of squabbling,’ Michelle revealed.

Adam was quick to jump in, pointing out that they’ve ‘got over that now’.

‘Both of us have mellowed. I think we’re both just a bit more kind of comfortable in our lives,’ Michelle agreed.

The pair clearly get on very well, with Adam saying: ‘Working with Michelle has been like putting on an old pair of slippers [laughs]. It just works.’

In terms of how Cindy Beale has changed over the year, Michelle revealed that she will be more ‘complex’ than ever before.

‘What was important was I said to Chris Clenshaw (Executive Producer) “Is she going to come back and be exactly the same as she was before?” and you were like, “No.” She’s complex, of course she’s complex.’

One thing is for certain: There’s plenty for viewers to look forward to where Cindy Beale is concerned.
