All Creatures Great and Small's Nicholas Ralph on animal co-stars
Callum Woodhouse, who plays Tristan Farnon in the Channel 5 series All Creatures Great and Small has opened up about “crying” over his lines for season three’s heartbreaking finale. Fans will recall his brother Siegfried Farnon (played by Samuel West) discovered Tristan had been called out to fight in the war effort. Despite his best efforts to intervene, Tristan made it clear he’d be leaving Skeldale House, leaving Siegfried devastated.
The series finale saw the usually stiff upper-lipped Siegfried telling his younger brother he loved him and wanted to ensure he was safe.
During Christmas dinner, Tristan made a speech to let his brother know how much he also meant to him.
After the touching speech which Tristan told his brother across the dining room table, Siegfried dropped him off at the train station and they shared a heartfelt goodbye.
The instalment left fans in floods of tears as well as Tristan actor Callum.
Opening up about the emotional scene in All Creatures Great and Small, Callum explained to Masterpiece: “I don’t like to say too much pretentious stuff, because sometimes when I see people going on, I’m like, ‘Oh, come on, get a room. Stop it.’
“But that speech, I remember we got it maybe two or three weeks before filming it, and I don’t think in the entire time leading up to it I managed to read it all the way through without crying.
“And I remember saying to someone, ‘I don’t know if I’m going to be able to actually learn it, because every time I’m trying to learn it, I end up just crying, and I have to go to the toilet to sort myself out.'”
The star admitted he had a “really hard” time learning it because it made him “so emotional”.
“Doing it, I don’t think I let the emotion dictate the scene because it was so beautifully written,” he added.
“You just need to say the words, and it does the trick because the words are beautiful.
“But I think because I’d spent so long getting emotional about it, it was maybe just all bubbling under the surface, which I think, I guess, made it more sincere.”

Within the speech, Tristan said: “All of us are missing someone. Most we’ll see another time, others we won’t.
“I want to remember them and give thanks to those who filled a hole they left behind, especially my brother, who made a promise to our dying father that he would take care of me, make sure I was properly educated and that I would make someone of myself.”
He added: “He never gave up on me, no matter how much I wished he would.
“And I certainly gave him enough reason to. Lesser men would have thrown in the towel, but he didn’t.
“And I want to thank him for that. I love you, Siegfried. So, I guess the only thing left to say is Merry bl**** Christmas.”
Season four of All Creatures Great and Small doesn’t currently have a release date but it is expected to air on Channel 5 later this year.
Viewers will undoubtedly want to know if Tristan returns from the war unscathed and if anyone else is sent off to fight when the show returns.
