In a new episode of season 20 of the long-running singing competition show, the first half of the Top 24 showcase their amazing skills in front the judges.
AceShowbiz -The first half of the Top 24 returned to the stage in Sunday, April 10 episode of “American Idol” season 20. The performances, which were pre-taped in Hawaii, were kicked off by Jay Copeland who won the platinum ticket during Austin auditions.
He decided to sing “Want You Back” by the The Jackson 5 that night. While judge Lionel Richie said that his singing is “off the charts,” the judges were not satisfied with the song choice. They didn’t think it highlighted Jay’s best abilities.
Following it up was Elli Rowe, who took the stage to sing “Everywhere” by Fleetwood Mac. Katy Perry noted that Elli looked nervous during the performance, but it was “beautiful and angelic” regardless. The judges also loved her song choice.
Singing “With a Little Help From My Friends” by The Beatles was Tristen Gressett. He got a standing ovation from the judges with Luke Bryan gushing, “You go out and you leave it on the stage every single time!” He was also praised for his stage presences and energy.
Scarlet then hit the stage to sing Dua Lipa‘s “Levitating”. Katy was on her feet dancing almost immediately, while Lionel applauded Scarlet’s ability to get the crowd going and bring the entertainment factor.
Sage followed it up with a performance of the Dolly Parton classic “Jolene”, but she made the song her own by putting a unique spin on it. Katy loved it as she urged Sage to continue showing off her “individual quirks and strengths.” Later, Danielle Finn performed Elton John‘s “Your Song”. Luke and Katy thought that something was lacking in her performance as they urged her to improve her stage presence.
Mike Parker then showed off his skill by singing Jimmie Allen‘s “Best Shot” and he earned a standing ovation from the judges. They called it a “great” performance and praised him for taking their past advice. Emyrson Flora was up next, belting out “Angels Like You” by Miley Cyrus. Luke and Katy loved it with the former saying that it was one of the “favorite performances” that he’s seen.
Dan Marshall, meanwhile, opted to perform Bryan Adams‘ “Heaven” that night. He took Jimmie’s advice to not use his guitar onstage and that was apparently a good decision as Lionel praised him for that. Later, Jacob Moran hit the stage to sing Shawn Mendes‘ “In My Blood”, which Lionel called one of his “greatest performances” on the show so far.
HunterGirl hoped to awe the judges with a performance of “Banjo” by the Rascal Flatts. Katy pointed out a few pitch issues. Luke, meanwhile, loved her song choice and praised Hunter for ditching the guitar for her performance that night. Concluding the night was Nicolina, who sang “Elastic Heart” by Sia Furler. She earned a standing ovation that night. Luke even called her “one of the best singers” in the competition.
