Ant and Dec admit this week’s Saturday Night Takeaway could be the last amid coronavirus outbreak

Ant and Dec have revealed they are uncertain about the future of their show Saturday Night Takeaway, which will air without a studio audience for the first time in it's 18 year history this weekend.

The 44 year olds — whose full names are Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly — appeared on Friday's episode of This Morning, admitting they're not sure if their hit show will return next weekend.

Saturday Night Takeaway's future is uncertain due to the current coronavirus crisis sweeping the globe.

The ratings hit will go ahead this weekend, but Ant explained to Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford that it might be the last episode for a while.

He said: "We wanted to do the show to put a smile on people's faces, we might not be able to do another one.

"We don't know, we just want to get on air, have some fun, and hope that you'll all enjoy it too."

His co-presenter Dec continued: "For as long as we are allowed, and as long as we are able, we will try to bring you a show."

Discussing the upcoming episode, Dec added: "It will be strange, and different — the studio will be how it is now, this is how it is going to look tomorrow night on the show.

"We are still going to run down the stairs, these seats will all be empty but we've got loads of stuff in the show tomorrow night.

"We are just going to see how it goes and try and bring some smiles to some faces."

It was confirmed earlier this week that the Geordie duo would be performing to empty seats, in a statement by broadcaster ITV.

They said: "Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway will go ahead this weekend without a studio audience.

"Our priority is safeguarding the well-being of everyone involved. The show will be made with a reduced production crew and in accordance with the latest guidance from Public Health England.

"The team are looking forward to bringing our viewers a brilliant show on Saturday evening," they continued.

Fans were quick to applaud the duo for their decision, with one fan writing: "So no Win The Ads etc? A wise decision, following yesterday's Government advice."

An insider had told The Sun Online: "This is a real blow to the lads but they're creative and held a meeting with the top bass at ITV to see how they could make the show work moving forward.

"They have mooted the idea of keeping the audience away and going ahead with the show and most of their usual skits, like 'Undercover' and 'Men In Brown'."

Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway airs at 7pm on ITV on Saturday night.
