Beyond Paradise: Martha tells Humphrey about not wanting children
Beyond Paradise has been airing on BBC One with Kris Marshall returning as Humphrey Goodman. He and his wife-to-be Martha Lloyd (played by Sally Bretton) have been on an emotional rollercoaster with their IVF treatment. Express.co.uk has all you need to know about actor Marshall’s real-life children.
How many children does Kris Marshall have?
The first season of the Death in Paradise spin-off has followed Humphrey and Martha on a difficult personal journey.
Martha, who was going through IVF treatment, lost her baby at the start of the season and the pair have been trying to come to terms with the loss ever since.
While Martha finally decided she wanted to stop trying, Humphrey found it difficult to hide his disappointment.
Their opposing desires are something that weighs on Martha’s mind as she is worried she cannot give Humphrey what he wants and deserves.
Off-screen, actor Marshall is married to Hannah Dodkin and the pair tied the knot in 2012.
They have two children together including a son Thomas and a daughter Elsie.
As of 2023, Elsie is aged nine and is the star’s eldest child, whilst Thomas is six.
The family live in Bath, Somerset, with the actor coming from the South West of England.
The actor said his children were the reason he decided to leave Death in Paradise, which was filmed in Guadeloupe.
In an interview with Lorraine Kelly, he said: “I realised I had to get my son to school.
“He was becoming a bit too Caribbean – he refused to wear shoes and would only drink coconut water and eat pineapple.
“He was very good on the beach but not so good with Maths and English, so I decided that it was time to get him to school.
“So the show had to go, really. But six months later I’m standing on a film set in a car park in Dagenham thinking at four o’clock in the morning thinking, ‘Have I made the right decision?'”
His wife and children had relocated to Guadeloupe with him whilst he filmed Death in Paradise.
The star also praised his children for helping him get over his impatience.

He told the Daily Mail: “I was at my son’s sports day the other day and it was very hot.
“I started to get a bit antsy, so I went over and sat with him and had the most enlightening conversation.
“Normally I’d have walked off somewhere or sat in my car. But I just had the most beautiful conversation with my boy.
“If I hadn’t taken stock, I’d have lost that moment. Impatience robs of you of such moments.”
The 49-year-old star is also known for playing Nick Harper in the BBC sitcom, My Family.
He will also be recognised for his work on Love Actually, The Merchant of Venice and Citizen Khan.
He and his wife had previously lived in the Long Barton area of Wells before relocating to Bath.
Opening up about filming Beyond Paradise so close to home, he said: “I’m a Somerset boy by birth and I grew up there as well.
“Somerset is the next county along from Devon and Cornwall, so it’s all part of the West Country and in my opinion it’s the most beautiful part of the UK.
“It has everything; cider, cheese, countryside, amazing coastline.”
Beyond Paradise airs on BBC One on Fridays at 8pm.
